Mountain Bike Hubs – Cartridge or Loose?
I’m considering a new rear wheel for my mountain bike and a little unsure of what to go with. In the past, I have overhauled loose ball bearing hubs, and while they haven’t been too much of a problem, I can’t help but to be attracted to the simplicity of cartridge bearings. My front wheel currently has cartridge bearings, and the rear has loose ball. This was due to me upgrading the front wheel when I got a fork with 20mm axle. I have not noticed a difference from front/rear, but I know I’m certainly no expert on bikes and I figured I’d ask for further opinion before I just go buy-happy.
Does anybody have an opinion to throw on the table? As of now I’m considering getting a cartridge bearing rear wheel, but I’m open to other opinions if there are better options out there.
Cartridge bearing hubs have been widely available since the 80′s so it’s not a revolutionary development.
Cartridge bearings simply have the added benefit of better contamination resistance and higher precision tolerances, but they’re not completely infallible.
Ehh screw it, just get sealed bearing hubs.
