Anyone here used slick tyres before?

I want to replace my off road tyres on my mountain bike with the road tyres on the link below but I need to know if in wet conditions are slick tyres likely to lose grip more than off road ones when cornering fast? What do u think of these tyres? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Continental-Sport-Contact-MTB-Road-Tyres-Tubes-26-x-1-3_W0QQitemZ160253288703QQihZ006QQcategoryZ27954QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

I agree with everyone else about the wet weather…..slicks do just fine as long as you’re on clean pavement. However, the normal treacherous things such as painted lines, metal surfaces, and railroad tracks will still be…treacherous. That goes for slicks or knobbies….so be careful of those things in the rain.

I rode some 2.0 IRC Metro Duro II tires on my mountain bike for quite awhile. I don’t think they make them still, but there’s a similar model. These are totally slick. They gripped GREAT in all conditions, and i even did a couple of xc races on them (they did surprisingly well unless I was in slippery mud or wet leaves/roots). It actually got me to thinking about tread design and nowadays I run much less agressive tires than I used to unless the trail is really nasty or loose.

You’ll really like how fast and quietly you can roll on slicks…makes the bike really come alive! If you want to, you can run a larger volume slick than the ones you’re looking at on Ebay. Other than being heavier in mass, they really aren’t any slower than skinny tires, and they’ll provide a bit of cush even at higher pressures whereas the skinny tires won’t.

Another really good dual-purpose tire that you might consider is the Maxxis Holy Roller. That’s what I’m running on my urban/abuse bike now, and I take it on the trails frequently, too. They roll pretty good and have plenty of cornering grip…very durable, too…and not expensive. Just something to consider. Also, since you’re on the other side of The Pond, you might check out the Halo Twin Rail tires….very nice.

Hope this helps….enjoy them! :o )
