Downhill Mountain Bike Skills

I can’t decide if i should join my school’s mountain biking team? I’m quite intimidated by it, actually…?
My school last year got 1st place in state for mountain biking, and this year I was considering joining. I went on a ride with them once, and one of the coaches had to stay behind me the whole time, advising me and teaching me the skills I had to know for the ride.
I was separated (because of falling behind) from the rest of the beginners and the last- year veterans, and I felt bad for the coach that had to tag along with me. I had trouble going uphill most of the time, but downhill was a blast.
If i decide to join biking (which i have to confirm within a week), then I would be the only frosh/soph girl on the team..
I’m afraid that I will always be falling behind from everyone and that people will make fun of me, since I will most likely be the worst on the team.
Do I need more muscle? Skill? Or is this basically a sign- that I’m not athletically fit for biking- and that I shouldn’t join the team?
That ride was also my first mountain bike ride.
Ask yourself one question. Do I enjoy mountain biking?. If you do and enjoy competition, join the team. Nobody can expect to be the best the first time out, but as a beginner, you will probably improve faster than the rest of the team. It can be very encouraging to experience personal improvement, and I would wager that the best of your teammates will not laugh, but encourage as you improve. Muscle and skill will come with training. The fact that you enjoy the downhills indicates to me that you are not fearful, improvement in climbing will come as you acquire fitness and riding technique
