Bicycle Computer
Understanding the features of a cycling computer, brought to you by Trek Bicycle Store of Fort Myers and Naples.
A bicycle computer is one of the first accessories that a new cyclist gets, but knowing what one to buy can be confusing. This month’s article will go over the features of most common bicycle computers from basic to advanced. All the computers will work with road, tri, mountain, hybrid and recreational bicycles, styles, and wheel sizes.
To start, computers will range in price from $30 to $500 or more. The entry-level computers will have a wired mount, with a sensor at the wheel and a wire that connects the sensor to the computer at the handlebar. Most computers, however, will be wireless, with no wire between the sensor and the computer at the handlebar. This makes for a clean, unobstructed look on the bicycle. The high-end of the range can use no wheel sensors at all, with GPS Satellites calculating speed and distance. They will all be weather-resistant and easy to read in most scenarios.
Our entry-level computers are a wired mount and range from $30-$55. We have 3 choices in Bontrager computers is this style: The Trip 1,2, and 3. All of the Trip computers will share the same 6 functions (Speed, Maximum Speed, Clock, Ride time, Distance, Odometer) with the other Trip computers having additional features such as Average Speed, Temperature, Pace Arrow, or Cadence.
Mid-range bicycle computers are all wireless mount and range from $60-$70. We have 2 choices from Bontrager called the Trip 4W and Trip 5W. Both of them share Speed, Max Speed, Average Speed, Clock, Ride Time, Distance, Pace Arrow, and Odometer. The Trip 5W adds a Back-light and Temperature. We also carry the Cat-eye Strada Wireless which has similar functions as the Bontrager Trip 4W.
High-end computers will be wireless or GPS-enabled and range in price from $75-$500. Bontrager has the Node 1 and 2. These are full-featured computers that can help give you detailed information and even help you in training. These two computers have the same basic features as the others, but adds the ability to add cadence, heart rate, heart rate training zones, interval timers, calorie counter, and nutrition reminder. These also feature a universal digital sensor called ANT+ that can connect to a variety of other compatible devices such as power meters. They also have the option of an integrated sensor that mounts in the frame of Trek Madone road bikes to make the cleanest look available in a wireless mounting system.
Finally, the most full-featured computer we carry is the Garmin Edge 705. This computer has the same basic functions as all the other bicycle computers listed above, but is more similar to your vehicle GPS. It has a large, color screen, GPS and ANT+ connectivity, turn-by-turn directions, moving maps, elevation, and is completely upload-able to your computer to use and share the data. No wheel sensor is required so this computer is great if you frequently travel or swap from bike to bike.
AS you can see, bicycle computers range from basic functions to advanced training tools. No matter if you want to simply know your speed and distance, get from point A to point B without getting lost, or want to see, record, measure, and scrutinize every aspect of your cycling, there is a bicycle computer for you out there.
