How to clean a bike left outside for 2 years?
I am going to disassemble everything but the bearings, and am thinking of using simple green and solvent to clean the grease/grime/rust from everything (with steel wool where necessary) and then using standard grease (like from an auto shop) to lube up the parts that need it. Am I on the right track? It’s a Trek 4100 mountain bike.
Thanks for your input, guys. I left my bike with a friend to store, where according to him, it was in the garage. Now that I got it back it is obvious that he really put it outside.
The frame is aluminum. I was only thinking of using the steel wool on things like the pedals, shoe clips, and gears, which are rusty. I already removed the chain and am gonna let it soak in solvent for about a week. I was thinking of using simple green to clean the frame.

1) what’s the frame material of the bike? Steel? Steel wool will scratch the paint which is the only thing between your bike and rust. I would not use the steel wool UNLESS you plan on repainting the bike.
2) do not use car grease on a bike, the principle is different. Car grease is made to ATTRACT AND HOLD DIRT to take it where it’s filtered and expunged from the engine. This will ruin your bike parts. Bike grease is designed to repel and shed dirt.
Get thee to a local bike shop. While you can make your own citrus degreaser out of guess what? Citrus like lemon oil but there are degreasers, solvents and bike lube that are specific to bikes. They will show you what you need to clean and tune the bike.
