Check the link below for a good tutorial.
A good brush, an old toothbrush for harder to reach areas, a bucket, car wash (work well and aren’t harsh), bio-degradable de-greaser, and some rags or old towels are a good start.
Lubes: wet for wet weather, dry for dry conditions.
My rear shock gets dirty easily, so I wrapped it in an old inner tube. I had to remove the shock, but it works great.
My old front fork has rubber boots over the legs, but I haven’t seen them on the newer models. They’ve always worked for me, preventing a lot of extra rebuilds.
Steel can rust if left bare. Keep it painted, lubricated, or waxed and you should be fine. To tell if the part is steel, take a magnet to it. If it sticks, it’s steel.
Keep your chain clean, lightly lubricated, and check it’s wear at least once a year. Chains are expendable. A worn chain will wear out your gears faster.
As for your brakes, follow the suggestions at the brake manufacturer’s website. They’ll give careful instructions. If in doubt, take it to a shop. Brakes are most definitely not something to skimp on.
Truing a wheel (straightening) is an art. I recommend you either learn from a pro or pay someone to do this.
As for how long I’ve gotten my bikes to last, the 1st bike I bought at 13 is now my brother’s bike 29 years later. My dad has a 70 year old Raleigh with the original Brooks saddle. And yes, they are all still ridable. I regularly ride my 10 year old mountain and touring bikes. So a bike can last as long as you want if you don’t go beyond its limits.
A good set of tools are indispensable. And so is the knowledge to use them. Park tools are the industry standard, their repair help pages very good. Sheldon Brown was encyclopedic in his knowledge. His website is an incredible gift to cycling.
Keep the inflated rubber side down and Happy Trails!
