Mountain Bike Athletes
What is the best mountain bike for me?
I decided to train for a triathlon. Yes, I am a serious athlete and so running and swimming isn’t a big problem for me. However, biking is a whole different story…
My training buddy (who is now doing half ironman) has a nice Gary Fischer bike which I have ridden and it feels pretty good. But what are thoughts and opinions on bikes at different price ranges?
$500-$1000, $1000-$1500, $1500-$2000, $2000+
Am I better off buying a nifty bike so I don’t have to get another once for a while, what about repair costs?

I am a bit taken back in that a normal triathlon is done on road bikes, or a triathlon bike. You can find a good one in any of those price ranges, if your just talking about a road bike. I recommend spending less now and making sure you like the sport. You can always up-grade your components later. The frame is key for you right now!
So lets say you spend $500.00 on a bike with bad components, but has a light frame. If you spend another $500.00, your bike may perform like a 1500, or 2,000 bike.
In my opinion, it is key to make sure you will like it. If you do on a less expensive bike, than you are sure to love it on a higher quality bike. I don’t know how many guys I see on super expensive bikes that suck. I’m keeping up with them on a 300.00 frame with 150.00 in upgrades. You have got to remember that if you take 2 equal athletes, than the difference comes with the technology each may use. If one guy isn’t as good of an athlete than the the bike will make less of a difference for the final result.
I work with a girl that came in top 5 in a triathlon on a 400.00 dollar bike. She is a good runner and an awesome swimmer. She now wants to replace the bike that was given to her. The other females will not stand a chance at that point.
