Mountain Bike Boxes
Between these two bikes which should I get?
I am looking at a Trek 1100 road bike which the seller says he bought used but is still in the boxes and unassembled. He will sell it unassembled for $125 or assembled/road ready for $175.
The other bike I am looking at is a Trek 800 mountain bike with a new chain, new seat, new inner tubes, and a new pump for $140. I wanted a road bike like the 1100 but I’m not sure which of these two is a better deal (I’m on a tight budget).
So which would be better to get? I’m 5’6″ with a 27″ inseam so I’m not sure if either bike is not the right size (I have not looked at either in person).
The most important thing is fit. So FIRST, find out if the bikes you are considering are a suitable size. See the links for articles on bike fit. While you can change components to vary a bike to fit, given your budget constraint you want the one you buy to fit “as is”.
Second, and almost as important is the question of what the bike is for. A road bike is great for good paved roads, longer trips, racing, etc. While a mountain bike is best for rough roads (city or country). But mountain bikes are heavier and slower and not as comfortable on longer trips. Decide on which style fits your needs / local terrain and you are almost there … just make sure whichever style you choose fits!
