Can I convert my mountain bike into a commuter bike?
I have a Cannondale caad3 mountain bike and am thinking about getting rid of the rock shox and I want to get skinny tires like I had on my road bike. I just didn’t like riding the road bike because it hurt my back all the time. I’ve gone on week+ long 400 mile raod trips on the cannondale and it was fine, but am trying to figure out how to make it a little speedier. Can I swap rims without much trouble to get some 700cc’s on there?

Changing from 26 inch to 700 wheels is not trivial.
Get 26×1.5 slick tires. Make sure that the max tire pressure is at least 80 – 85 psi. I’ve done this in the past and it has worked reasonably well. I once got the very cheapest ones (just under $10) I could find and the max pressure was only 60 psi. I wasn’t happy with them on the road.
Don’t give up on road bikes. There are models with a relaxed geometry that is easier on the back. Examples are the Giant OCR series, Trek Pilot, and Cannondale Synapse. If you’ve got some money for bling, look at the Cervelo RS. I have the Giant OCR C2 and the riding position is just a bit more upright, easy on the back.
