England’s Lake District – A Tourist’s Guide
The Lake District continues to be a popular tourist destination, with thousands of people heading there each year, and with so much to see and do here it’s easy to see why tourists keep returning. Stunning scenery, a diverse landscape and the opportunity to take part in outdoors activities are just some of the reasons why people are so attracted to this beautiful part of England. There’s also a wide choice of places to stay making this a well-equipped area for tourism.
So just what is it that makes the Lake District so special? Well the obvious detail to start with are the lakes themselves. The area is dotted with lakes that are home to a wide range of species and these huge expanses of water give the place a feeling of space and tranquility. Some of the lakes are centers for water sports and you can enjoy rowing, canoeing or kayaking or even learn to sail here. If you prefer to take it easier you can simply enjoy a picnic by the side of one of the lakes.
The Lake District is home to five of England’s tallest mountains making it an obvious choice of destination for those who are keen on hiking. And there are plenty of other smaller mountains or easier fell walks to tackle for those who are less ambitious. There are walking opportunities for all levels of abilities and the beautiful natural scenery makes for some wonderful views from the tops. Ridge, lake and mountain walks have been mapped in various guidebooks and most are easily accessible from any of the main Lakes tourist centers.
A very popular reason for visiting the Lake District is to take part in outdoor recreational activities. The opportunities for indulging in your favorite sport are abundant and keen cyclists, mountain bikers, rock climbers and pot-holers, to name just a few, make their way here every year to enjoy a favorite activity whilst surrounded by stunning natural scenery. And after a hard day outdoors enjoying yourself there are plenty of cosy country pubs and eateries to try out and relax in with a few beers and some tasty home cooked food.
For those who enjoy arts and culture the Lake District also has several notable museums and galleries. The area was popular with some of the UK’s Romantic Poets and William Wordsworth is said to have written his famous poem ‘I wandered lonely as a cloud’ here after being inspired by the beautiful surroundings. The Wordsworth Museum incorporates Dove Cottage and is a thorough testimony to this literary past. Another museum with literary connections is The World of Beatrix Potter Centre; this interactive museum documents the writer’s life and is a wonderful experience for adults and children alike.
