Mountain Bike Century Training

thinking about riding my first century, on a mountain bike?
ok here is the deal I can ride about 20 miles in a little less then an hour and a half and that isn’t really trying plus with knobby tires with about 40psi. If I got some slick high pressure tires and trained a bit I should be able to complete a century in 9hrs including the stops right? plus I don’t care if I ride alone most of the time I know ill be slower on a MTB then a road bike
note:I normally ride trails but really want to ride at least one century in my life. I am a poor college student that cant afford to get a road bike for one ride so please don’t suggest that.
Not a problem. I do most of my triathlon training using my MTB on local rails-to-trails. That includes several sub-6 hour 100′s, even with the knobbies.
You’ll have some trouble sticking with the roadies, but for a non-competitive ride, that doesn’t really matter. Remember also that you’re a kid yet. People don’t even hit their peak in endurance sports until the early-mid 30′s. You’ve got plenty of time for centuries.
Training for a century! BDB 2011
