Sail Away From Winter Blues At Phukets Kings Cup Regatta
The Thai tourist industry continues its rapid recovery, with future profits expected to boom due to the return of a number of popular annual events. Phuket is a key part of the Thai holiday package, a tropical island paradise that trumps many similar destinations by keeping the mainland so readily accessible. With its white sandy beaches, lush tropical forests and endless skies, Phuket has ‘tropical paradise’ down to the high level set by Caribbean holidays. You’d also expect positive comparrisons with Mauritius holidays with their similar Indian Ocean sensibility and environment.
When you’re considering Thailand holidays, Phuket is second only to Bangkok in name recognition, but probably superior to all other destinations in terms of reputation. An ideal destination for a winter getaway, December visits to Phuket coincide with some great December sporting events. The Laguna Phuket triathlon attracts touring athletes from around the world for a punishing 1,800 metre swim followed by a 5.5 kilometre bike race and 12 kilometre run. It’s also possible to enter the six kilometre fun run, though this usually has to be done well in advance of the event.
There’s also Phuket’s Kings Cup Regatta, original a celebration for the King’s 60th Birthday, now an internationally important sailing event with royal patronage. Now in its twenty fourth year The Regatta is the biggest and most popular in Asia, and naturally, it attracts competitors from around the world. Trophies are given to winners, with many sub-categories for boats of various classes. Spectators and passers-by will have as much to enjoy on the water’s edge as the yacht-owners on the waves. Seeing the keel boats and multi-hulls facing off against each other is great fun, and there are plenty of habourside events to keep more sceptical tourists entertained.
