What is a good entry level mountain bike for DH racing?
I’m looking for a well built, durable downhill bike. I’m not looking to spend like 3 grand so something cheap. Thanks
Well, built, durable, sorry mate you are going to be laying down some money…if you plan getting a beautiful plush bike. And another realization. 3 grand is not all that expensive for a good Downhill bike.
Inexpensive / cheap bikes for under 2000 dollars will not last long at all. Thank God for Craigslist. Used bikes are your only real option….and used bikes are great, its how i got started. Good bikes for cheap, whats not to love?

Specialized Big Hit
Kona Stinky (my favorite, but more freeride)
Jamis Dakar BAM
The Specialized Big Hit one may be in your price range, but i would rather go for used and get a really nice bike for cheap, and in good condition (make sure you see it in person before you buy)
Check the following things before buying a used bike, as always:
-Cracks in frame, especially where the seat post enters bike, this is a weak spot on all bikes.
-any parts that have been bent back into place
-check to make sure that the wheels are not wiggling when tightened down all the way, this means you may need to overhaul the bearings (altho usually only 20 dollars at a bike shop)
-check for any leaks in the brakes (hydraulic) all the way from lever to caliper, squeeze the brake hard first, incase the seller has wiped it off so you dont notice. Also check for leaks on the fork and rear shock, and compress them several times to see if any leaks occur.
-Check for any rust, rust on the chain is fine (cheap to replace) but a rusted derailer is a sign that the previous owner neglected the bike, and that you need to replace a 300 dollar component.
-Get the right size
