About The Invention Of Mountain Bikes
It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that mountain bikes are designed for riding on mountain trails. They were invented by ordinary guys who loved to take their bikes off the road and ride hard on steep dirt tracks. Since Diamondback bikes hadn’t been invented yet, they had to modify the bikes they had with the few tools they had at their disposal.
Road and racing bikes were no good for their purposes because they had such skinny tires. Those tires are designed to reduce traction, while their bikes needed even more. The bikes they worked with were fat tired street bikes.
What racing bikes have that fat tired bikes didn’t have was a good range of gears. The first mountain bikes were hybrids. They took the derailleurs from the best racing bikes and added them to the clunky bikes they were using on the trails.
The upright handlebars of street bikes were no good for their new bikes. They started off by sticking straight steel bars on their bikes. Later, they added perpendicular pieces of steel to the ends, so they could pull back on the handlebars when they were climbing up steep hills.
Still not satisfied with their hybrid designs, these young inventors started designing and making custom frames from scratch. They started using lighter weight metals and made radical changes to the frame designs. It wasn’t long before people took notice of their bikes and started ordering them from the makers.
The first mountain bikes were all made by small, backyard bicycle mechanics. Only later did the Schwinn mountain bike and others by the established bike manufacturers hit the market. Interestingly, some of the biggest names in MBs are still made by those guys who started out with nothing.
A guy screaming down a slope in a black football helmet in doesn’t look too good and the helmet really wasn’t designed for that kind of use anyway. Helmets made specifically for mountain bike riding were invented. Today, you can get a black helmet that both looks great and is perfect for riding your mountain bike.
The mountain bike was definitely not just a passing fad. They continue to be some of the best selling bicycles on the market. They are seen on every city street as well as off road. They now are made with sophisticated components, such as high quality gears and disc brakes.
It would be a big stretch to say that the MB is as important invention as the PC. Nevertheless, the two share similar histories. Both of them came from the minds of young enthusiasts with little money, but big ideas. They both say a lot about the power of ideas and determination.
