Mountain Bike Dj Frames
dj bike size for a very tall person?
hey
a friend of mine is interested in getting a dj mtb (dirt jump mountain bike). Problem is the sizing. He’s 6’5”. He currently has a trek 4200, i think? Its got a 24 inch top tube or whatever, the size listed on the frame is 24 inch, which is way big for jumping, and he currently can’t really jump anything with it, because of both the geometry and the huge size
so. What size is good for him? (remember, this is an mtb dj’er, a bit smaller is better than a bit bigger)
also, what would be some decent bikes that accommodate his size?
I’m pretty sure you can get a custom sized p. bike from specialized, not sure who else does this though

Most jump frames come in one size……or two sizes that have an inch or so difference between them in the length of the top tube, but still have the same vertical height.
If he gets a freeride hardtail frame, he can have more choices on size, but you run into that same problem with trying to jump a larger frame. The max I’ve seen on fr/ht is 18″ I think, which would be way small by xc standards, but would fit him fine. If you check out www.jensonusa.com, they have the Jamis Komodo complete for like $350 right now. It’s a good frame and will handle the abuse, but it’s not as keen on swanky tricks as a dedicated jump frame is.
With his size, he’ll probably appreciate the longer top tube in whichever frame he gets, especially if he starts doing tricks. We have a friend who is 6’4″ and he does just fine with the normal jump frames, even though the LOOK really small on him. I’m 6’1″ and have been on a 16.5″ frame but I’m moving into a 14″ on……Monday! Hooray for UPS.
