Mountain Bike Double Crankset

what would be the best crankset upgrade for my bike situation please help?
so i got a schwinn hybrid from target, it runs well, i didnt have much money for road bike, i since have change to drop bars with shimano tiagra shifters, but having trouble with mountain bike crankset, the bike is 24 speeds, 8 in back and 3 up front, i was wondering what would work better for my bike a double crank or triple, as is i dont use the smallest gear upfront but not sure how this will affect my bike, thanks for any answers?
i meant what type of road bike crank would work better, i also have shiamno road front and back derailers that i picked up for a cheap price as the ones i have on now are more for mountain use.
Hmm, sounds like a very interesting set up you have here. It’s definitely not a wise choice upgrading a department store – aka disposable – bike because all you’re doing is polishing poop. But since your already far into it what the hell.
If you rarely, if at all, use the granny gear then a double would be the best choice. Now, for your particular bike, if you get a double crank, try and find one that still uses the internal square taper (or octalink) bottom bracket because your probably going to have to get a shorter spindle to scoot the crankset closer to the chainstay so your chain line wont be so far off. The internal bb cranksets are older in design and therefore cheaper, but a good set up, say a Shimano 105 will be far nicer than what you have now.
I will reiterate: installing all of these nicer parts on a crap bike is not the best thing to do, even if your budget didn’t allow you to purchase a nice bike (from a bike shop) to begin with. On a good note, you’re probably going to learn quite a bit about working on a bike so at least there’s that.
