Which of the following would not be a good clincher sentence for a compare and contrast essay that begins with the following thesis:
Before you decide on a mountain bike, a touring bike, or a simple cruiser, consider the facts about each.
A. It’s wise to acquaint yourself with the characteristics of all three types of bikes before you buy one.
B. Mountain bikes, touring bikes, cruisers — they all have characteristics that make them ideally suited for different purposes.
C. If you correctly match the riding you expect to do with the bike you want, you’ll love your new mountain bike, touring bike, or cruiser.
D. To rank the bikes from best to worst, I’d put a touring bike first, a mountain bike second, and a cruiser third.
Since your thesis is telling the reader to weigh evidence before choosing a bike, you wouldn’t simply tell them your ranking opinion; it detracts from the reader figuring out which is best for him.
So, D would NOT be a good clincher.
