Mountain Bike Fork Oil
how can you stop a front suspension fork from squeaking?
The fork is a SR Suntor XCT fitted onto a 2006 GT Avalanche 3.0. I have tried pouring oil into the forks but hasn’t made any difference. It never used to squeak until i took it mountain biking in Wales where it got really wet. cheers
The coil springs have probably been washed dry and/or rusted. You can carefully unscrew the caps on the top of each leg…..be very careful that you don’t let up pressure and have the spring pop up without warning. Pull them out, clean them up, and use a tiny, long-as-you-can-find brush or mop to coat everything with a good sticky synthetic grease. Any grease will work, but some will adhere and last longer than others. Hopefully your fork will make this easy, otherwise you’ll need to separate the stanchions from the lowers and service it that way.
I’ve had GREAT luck with Manitou’s evil-genious seals keeping water out of their air forks….my bike ends up in the rain alot on the hitch rack, unfortunately. If I had any problem with it, I’d for sure buy some Lizard Skins boots to wrap around the stanchions…..sounds like you should get a pair of those to help keep things dry.
