Do you recommend Malaria Pills for Bolivia/Peru?
I am travelling to Peru and Bolivia next month and wanted to know what everyone recommends for vaccines/pills…etc. I am getting my yellow fever vaccine next week, however I’m slightly concerned about Malaria. I don’t think I need it since I won’t be going into the Amazon. My guide book ( Lonely Planet) only recommends it if you’re going into Amazon regions ( in Peru) or below 8000 feet ( in Bolivia). I’m assuming the guide book is correct with that, or do you have other suggestions? I also may be mountain biking the Death Road ( Yungas Road) from La Paz to Coroico. Coroico is at 5,003 ft, however I’ll only be there for a couple days. I have been reading up on the pros & cons of Malaria pills and can’t decide if it’s worth it. It’s expensive and the side effects can be horrible. What do you suggest? I’d like advice from other travellers
Many doctors will tell you that taking the Malaria pills for more than short time is as hard on you as the disease, especially if it is treated promptly. Aside from the “psycho” effects of Mefloquine, it as well as Chloroquine and Proguanil can be very damaging to your liver. I live full time in Central America where Malaria is prevalent and never take the prophylaxis. Your best defense is insect repellent, long sleeved shirts, long pants and a mosquito net over your bed at night if you are in an endemic region.
