What’s the purpose of the extra projection on bicycle handles?
MTB (Mountain Terrain Bikes) bikes have this extra projection above the grip of the handle. Is it so that we don’t lose hold of the handle when the bike undergoes a shock on uneven terrain?

It’s another place to put your hands as you ride, you can angle them more forward and use them when climbing. They are not for down hill because you can’t reach the brake. They are called bar ends and come in many different styles.
