It’s just a shirt for biking. They’re usually tight, which was inspired originally by road bikers (aerodynamic) and have three pockets in the lower back part for holding stuff (innertubes, water bottles, nutrition bars, etc). These can be short- or long-sleeved or sleeveless, and most have zippers at the top.
You certainly don’t need one to ride any type of bike, but the moisture wicking effect is nice and some like the tight fit vs. have something flap around in the wind. Personally, I use cheap, wicking t-shirts from Target or other big stores and I’m happy.
Racing teams often order the custom ones to have matching ‘uniforms’. Aerodynamics don’t matter unless you’re racing, and then only VERY little on a mountain bike, which isn’t really very aerodynamic to begin with.
