Mountain Bike Jumping Videos

To what degree can flatland BMX bikes be used for street style riding?
I’ve been avid casual cyclist for a while now,
In that I love biking everywhere but haven’t done any actual mountain, BMX or distance riding yet.
I’ve always been in awe at flatland BMX videos on youtube,
And would love to give it a go,
And i’m hoping that my background in parkour will help with balance and such,
Although I know its a completely different sport.
But I would also like to give more techy street riding a go,
So no massive drops but maybe some small jumps and things.
TL:DR Can I use a flatland bike for light street riding or vice versa or will that not really work?
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks
The degree to which you can use your flatland bike for street riding totally depends on the flatland bike you have. If ur riding something like the KHE Paris III ( http://www.customriders.com/prod_imgs/YFKH11119.jpg ) you wouldn’t want to do anything BUT flatland on this, as it’s way too light and fragile to take it over any little jumps or land hard with.
On the other hand though, flatland riders like Travis Collier and Matthias Dandois have bikes that are set up for flatland, but could withstand some light street too. ( http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e172/loudawg666/travis_collier_bike_check_3-625×411.jpg )
It basically comes down to the shape and strength of your frame. Length plays a part, also. Too short a frame and street will feel sketchy on it.
In short, if ur looking to do some light street on a flatland-setup bike, get urself a traditional shape frame (double diamond is what they’re commonly referred to as) and keep the top tube to a length above 19″ but below 20″. Don’t raise the seat pole too much, either. Keep it mid way between slammed (all the way in the seat tube) and fully raised (as far as the marker on the seat pole itself recommends. It’s marked on the pole, you’ll see it).
Get minimal offset forks instead of zero offset, it’ll make landing and turning feel more comfy and less sketchy.
