Mountain Bike Nishiki
What are some good lower-end bicycle brands and brands to stay away from?
I am looking for a used bike on craigslist and wondering what brands are generally reliable and what are not (i.e. which brands are department store brands). I don’t need anything fancy, just something that gets me from point A to point B without any hassle.
I’m going to be mostly riding on roads to get to college, but I don’t like super skinny wheels so I don’t know if what kind of bike I’ll get- mountain, road, or hybrid. Also, I’m 5’4″- what size frame will I need?
(A few brands I’ve seen so far: Magna, Raleigh, Royce Union, Diamondback, Huffy, Free Spirit, Nishiki, Kensington, Mongoose)
Stick with a brand that is sold at a bike shop. If you cant find the bike on the manufactures web site stay away from it. Schwinn makes great bikes but you wont find the Walmart version on their web site. A hybrid will be the best all al around bike for the money, look for a 15″ frame. A mountain bike is not the best thing to use on paved surfaces. Get a commuter, hybrid or comfort bike. Look for Trek, Giant, Fuji, Specialized, Raleigh, Schwinn, Jamis, and a few others.
