The top tube of ladies’ bicycles in older designs was made to slope steeply downward from front to back. This was so that the bicycle could be mounted and ridden with decorum while wearing a long skirt (which were – both the skirt and the decorum – the fashion in the early days of bicycles). Although not nearly so prevalent today, the tradition lives on in the design of many ladies’ bicycles.
