Mountain Bike Rear Wheel Bearings
What bike parts do I need to buy for my fixed gear? What gear ratio should I go for?
So I bought a whole mountain bike with fixed forks and horizontal drop outs for £25 the other day. What a steal.
So I have stripped it down and am left with the frame, forks, cranks, pedals, seat post, seat, bars and front wheel.
Then I still have the front chain ring on. How do I get this off? I have the tools I just lack technique
On my rear wheel I have taken the hub apart and only one side had bearings in it so I have taken them out and I have taken the axle out too.
So I need a rear axle, a front and rear sprocket and I have the old chain. Do I need a new chain?
What axle is compatible with fixed gear rear sprockets?
Do I need to buy a chain spider?
What gear ratio should I go for? 3/5 is comfortable on shimano gears on a 3/7 set thing

Fixed gear is NOT suitable for a mountain bike, i suggest that you mean “single speed”, with a freewheel.
The standard gear ratio for a SS MTB is 2:1, start with this and then change it later if you are not happy with it.
For use on the road you could consider a flip-flop rear hub with a fixed gear cog on the opposite side, in this case you would want a sprocket with 1 or 2 fewer teeth for a more suitable ratio. This means the wheel may be flipped without changing the chain length, just be careful that the brake blocks are aligned correctly with the rim.
