Which Mountain Bike Is Right For You?

If you’re looking at buying mountain bike, there are two brands you should consider: Diamondback and Schwinn Bikes. And why wouldn’t you want to buy a mountain bike? It’s been rising in popularity since the 80′s. Learning to ride a bike is a milestone many children won’t forget. It’s a skill you’ll never forget. They are relatively uncomplicated machines, as well. They are, at their most basic, a pair of wheels on a sturdy frame, set with a series of gears to make pedaling easier. They’re great for exercise and fun alike, and can take you just about anywhere. The important thing is choosing the right bike.

It was Ignaz Schwinn that started the Schwinn Bicycle Company in Chicago way back in 1895. They’ve lasted 115 years since their start, but they’ve hit some big bumps along the way. At the company’s start, they didn’t make much of a dent. Consumers were much more interested in motorcycles and automobiles. It wasn’t until the stock market crash of the 1920′s Schwinn hit their stride. Much of the public could no longer afford to maintain their automobiles, so they turned to bicycles. Over the next 30 years, Schwinn would start to dominate the bicycle industry. The company thrived between the 20′s and 50′s, seeing steady growth. But these were still just basic bicycles. It would take a few more decades for a Schwinn mountain bike to make an appearance.

As one of the few American bicycle manufacturers, Schwinn would grow to dominate the field by the 1950s. Trouble hit the company in the 60′s and 70′s, though. Schwinn focused on a general bicycle, but bicycle enthusiasts began to shift to specific types of biking, such as road racing, touring, or mountain biking.

Their position wasn’t helped when the management made a statement denouncing BMX racing as a dangerous sport. Without any bikes catered to the emerging market of BMX, Schwinn fell by the wayside in the 80′s and 90′s. In 2001, the company was finally sold to Pacific Cycles, though the parent company retained the brand name. It wasn’t until recently that a Schwinn mountain bike would appear in stores.

There are two major brands to look at when buying a mountain bike: Schwinn and Diamondback bikes. Compared to Schwinn’s history, Diamondback is a pretty young brand. They had a step up against Schwinn, however; Diamondback burst onto the market with a collection of sports bikes, each geared toward a specific type of biking. Schwinn couldn’t compete until they introduced their own mountain bikes.

Which brand you choose when buying mountain bike is entirely up to you. The real choice when buying a mountain bike is whether to get a hardtail bike or one with full suspension. Hardtails have the rear wheel mounted on the frame, making them great for smoother terrains by offering greater balance and stability. Without suspension, though, hardtails can become uncomfortable over rougher tracks.

Full suspension mountain bikes solve this problem. The rear wheel is connected to the frame through a suspension device. This device allows the rear wheel to keep contact with the ground more often, supplying more pedaling power to the rider. Of course, the suspension also offers some cushioning on rough terrain. It’s a good idea to find your trails first, then decide on the bike you need.
