Why The Decline In Bike Shops?
Going back 15 years you would have found 2-3 bike shops within a 5 mile radius. Nowadays however a great many have shut their doors and ceased trading, leaving only the bigger companies and shops that sell a range of products such as snowboards and surfboards as well as bikes. So why is it that independent cycle shops are having such a hard time and is there any chance of them recovering? Lets take a look at a few factors.
Greater number of cars. It doesn’t take a genius to see that there are a far greater cars on the road today than there once where. There are not only a larger amount of people buying cars these days but additionally they are driving them around more often. But does this effect the amount of people using bikes. Halfords, a large chain of shops in the UK that serves both car and bike owners have stated that over the past 10 years there has been a decrease of 10% in the number of commuter, second hand bikes and new mountain bikes sold. However, possible due to environmental and/or financial concerns at the moment, last year actually saw the first rise in the number of bikes sold.
Internet Shopping. Every day sees an a rise in the amount of purchases happening over the Internet. Bicycles may not have seen the most dramatic shift to internet sales as most people like to try before they buy, but there has still been movement in buying methods. According to the top bike retailer in the UK, sales on the internet account for 10% more of the total sales each year since 2000.
Trading websites. The growth and prominence of classifieds sites such as Craig’s List is another factor to consider. Once upon a time people would take their unwanted bikes to the local bike shop and either sell it or trade it in for a new one. These days you can post your bike on advert sites and get responses within hours sometimes. There are now even sites set up specifically for buying and selling used surfboard, kitesurfing gear and mountain bikes etc, such as Extreme Sports Trader and Bike Magic
