Mountain Bike Single Speed Conversion
mtn bike frame suitability…?
Is a Gary Fisher mountain bike frame suitable for conversion to a single speed city bike (I have all the parts from a single speed bike that got crunched in a collison). Please advise! –too heavy, wrong geometry, pros/cons???
Sure, you could do it if you want….no problem. While the geometry of most mountain bikes is a little “slower” than all road bikes, it’ll still work fine and feel comfy, if not zippy.
If you’re going to stick with 26″ wheels…..fine. If you want to put 700c wheels on there, you might be able to do it with v-brakes, but chances are that you won’t have enough adjustment for the pads to contact the rim. If you’re running disc brakes, it’d be no problem at all.
One other thing that you might run into is the rear hub spacing. If the crunched singlespeeder was a road frame, then you’ll need to get a new hub with the normal 135mm spacing for a mountain bike frame (the road ones use 130mm, or 126mm if it’s really old).
