The bicycle frames are made so you can easily cope with drops, jumps and rocky terrain. In the past, downhill bikes generally weigh 18 kgs or 40 lbs. The new models are about 45 lbs. There are also models reaching 50 lbs. Lighter bicycles were also introduced, weighing 38 lbs only or less.

A lot of downhill bikes have very long wheelbases, measuring up to 45 inches or more. The disc brakes span about 8 inches or 203 mm. The bikes also feature a chain guide to avoid chain derailment. The head tube standard is OnePointFive and has a 1.5-inch wide head tube. The head tube applied in standard bikes, on the contrary, is only 1.125 inches in diameter.
