Mountain bike lock out suspension – how do you use it?
I’m a biking virgin, but am trying to really get into mountain biking. I have a friend’s bike and it has lock out suspension, but my question is what the hell does that mean? 
How/when/why do you want to lock it?

Lockouts are on there to minimize any action of the suspension….it’s a way to make the bike act more “responsive” like a rigid frame when you want to put out power without bouncing.
There aren’t too many times that it’s helpful to use other than on pavement, where the bouncing can be excessive and irritating on some bikes/shock setups. Some people like to lock out their front fork when climbing….that can have advantages and disadvantages depending on the situation.
I don’t find them very useful…one of my bikes has lockouts front and rear and I only rarely use that feature. If you use it sometime, just be sure not to leave it locked out when you get back into bumpy things….it’s uncomfortable, but it can also cause you to wreck and some models can be damaged if you hit a big bump while locked out.
