Modify brakes and gears of Carrera Subway 1?

I have a Carrera Subway 1 bike and am thinking of swapping out the caliper brakes for disc ones and also trying to put a new gearset on it so I get 7 gears instead of 21 ( I mainly ride it on the road and paths – not up mountains). Is all of this possible?

Lets start at the beginning.

Swapping calipers for discs requires several things- proper bosses (mounts) on the frame to attach the disc calipers, hubs that can accept rotors (discs), and all the parts and experience to assemble the lot. Figure that it’ll cost about 60-80 quid per wheel just for the brake unit and rotor. If you need weldments on the frame or new wheels it can get more expensive in a hurry.

Regarding using 7 gears instead of 21, this means that you already have 7 gears in the back and 3 gears at the front, near the pedals. Rather than trying to change things, I suggest taking the bike to a specialist who can adjust the gears properly and show you how to use them. If you insist on just 7 gears, simply don’t use the 3 front gears (shifter on the left side of the bike).

In the end, it would probably be much cheaper to buy a new bike with the features you want.
