Mountain Bike Tutorial Video
How difficult is it to replace bicycle shifters/cables?
I really need a new right shifter on my schwinn (shimano) mountain bike, but I found a good bundle deal for both left and right shifters of the exact model shifters that I already have, which are actually a quite nice of a setup. I keep looking up videos and tutorials but they’re usually on road bikes or the shifters are completely different, what I’m really asking is should I attempt this myself? Is it difficult at all? I mean, I just don’t want to break anything and I could take it to a bike shop eventually if it is.
It’s simple enough. Took me 1 1/2 hours to fit a new front mech/ derailleur and cables for both front and rear mechs/derailleurs. Make sure you copy the position of the old shifters on your bars, grease your cables with lube, remember to put your cable housing back on in the right way. To calibrate your rear mech/derailleur set it into the biggest ring and pull the cable through pretty far then tighten of the nut-that should work nicely. It’s quite simple and rewarding; and it will save you £20 labour charges from the rip off bike shops!
