Road bike vs. mountain bike?

What are the cons for riding a mountain bike on a road? I know ideal would be a hybrid, but there just way out of my price range.

Hybrids are not any more expensive then mountain bikes. You can get a Forge Athena hybrid or a comfort mountain bike like the Devon for around $235. Both will handle the road and bike paths and are very good quality for the money. Change the knobbie tires to ones with universal tread.
