The Town Of Climbing, Hiking And Everything Outdoors – Ambleside
Often Fort William and Lochaber are talked about together as tourist places. Most tourists are sport lovers and like the outdoor activities. There are hill, mountain and water sports to keep you occupied.
What you can expect here- wonderful scenery, beautiful views and lots of outdoor sports. However most are highland sports, being in Highland country. Fort William is the largest town in West Highlands, Scotland.
Due to the location of Ambleside it attracts a lot of people who enjoy the outdoors and all of the activities associated with the outdoors. People come from all over to partake in hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking, and fishing just to name a few. Ambleside just makes a perfect place to enjoy all of these outdoor events due to its fantastic location and proximity to available resources.
Also for those that like to go hiking just south of Ambleside is the Roman fort of Galava from AD79. Definitely a place to visit for those interested in History. If history is your forte than there is also the Armitt Library and Museum which represents the local history, writers and artists of the past. Not only does Ambleside provide some interesting history but it also was granted a charter by James II to collect tolls.
In the year of 1959 Frank Davies opened the first outdoor shop in Ambleside. The town also is home to UK’s largest outdoor equipment store that has 5 departments and 3 floors. The sports store is an important part of Ambleside’s financial institution, since so much of the town is based on climbing and outdoor sports and activities. Due to the abundance of mountain climbers that visit Ambleside they also have their own mountain search and rescue team available. The team is made up completely of volunteers. Not only that but it remains the busiest volunteer team in the UK.
Water Bombs
Enjoying water fights is something we never grow out of. Delivering a good drenching – and receiving one – is the ultimate, timeless way to have raucous fun outdoors on a hot summer’s day.
Water bombs – tiny balloons which are filled with water and thrown at unsuspecting victims – are one of the cheapest ways to enjoy a water fight. They can be thrown, they can be dropped from an upper storey window, or they can be fired from a Wild Sling Solo – a high speed catapult specially designed for firing water bombs at speed across a good distance. Simply put your feet into the stirrups, draw back the balloon-loaded pouch, aim and fire – delivering a satisfying soaking to anyone who is unfortunate enough to get in the way
