The Calling Of The Open Road
Having a mundane white collar job at a law firm one really does not get to express their personality passionately. My job is very confining and structured. After time, as with most things, I desired a change. As often is the case, I started to make a list. As I was searching for the first things I yearned to do, I realized that making a list was not one of them. I ripped up the piece of paper.
So I darted out of the office and jumped in my SUV and let the road take me. At that moment, I remembered the thrill and joy of the open road I had once experienced as a teenager. I remember the first time I learned to drive and how cool I thought it was. Rolling down the windows looking at the road ahead. I felt freedom then. How can I feel that way again.
I came to a traffic light and it had just turned red. As I came to a stop, I noticed the guy driving a motorcycle in the lane next to mine. He did not resemble the biker stereotype. He was dressed like a biker model with a shiny leather jacket and stylish boots. He clearly worked out, but it was difficult to tell his age because his face was covered with a black helmet. He had a female passenger hanging on to him. She was attractive and appeared to be wearing an outfit similar to his.
I thought that could be me riding that hog. I could at least rent one this weekend and see how the experience grabs me. I decided to head home to find the nearest available motorcycle shop. I opened the garage door and parked the SUV. As I was entering the door, I noticed some of my other failed attempts at breaking out. There was a jet ski on the side, fishing rods, and alpine skiing equipment. However, none of those gave me the freedom I desired.
I thought this time it would be different. I knew I can enjoy this because I could do it anytime I wanted. I did not need to be in water or on a ski slope. I can be at home, in the park, out on the road and I would be free. I found the local directory and wrote down the address of a couple of local dealers. The first one I went to dealt in the prominent domestic brand of cycles. These were the ones I wanted.
The salesperson at the store was very understanding even with my over inquisitive approach. He provided me with all the relevant details regarding the selection, options, and prices. He was very well dressed and donned a stylish men’s sport watch. I told him my goal was to experience the joy of the open road. He thought a low rider with a high handle bar would be the perfect solution. I was eager to take it for a ride. I inquired about renting or leasing the bike for a few days.
He knew exactly where I was coming from. He said he understood. He knew how many people walk into his dealership and want to enjoy the thrill of riding one of their motorcycles, but are afraid of making the commitment. This is because they are not sure if this is really what they want or if they will be talked out of it from a relative or spouse. He let me sign a weekend lease. I was ready to take on the road.
