How Orbea Mountain BIkes Came to Be
One brand that is particularly well known in the field of mountain biking is Orbea mountain bikes. The company that makes them is based in a town called Mallavia, in Spain’s Basque country. Today the company makes Orbea mountain bikes, Orbea road bikes and Orbea touring bikes.
Not everybody realises that Orbea actually started life as a company which manufactured weapons. In its infancy, the business made rifles and pistols as well as cartridges. Throughout Spain, Orbea was renowned for the weapons it made. In fact, in the 1870s, Orbea was one of the most important, influential and successful companies in its region.
The company’s history of making weapons continued up until the end of the Spanish Civil War when demand waned. Things also changed in 1926 when the business split into two seprate companies following family problems. Orbea mountain bikes was born from one of the companies brought about by the split of the original company.
As is normal for well known and highly respected biking brands, Orbea has always supported and maintained close links with high profile biking teams. It has a very close relationship with the Basque cycling team Euskaltel-Euskadi as well as Xacobeo-Galicia. But since 2005 Orbea mountain bikes has also had its very own team.
These days, many Europe-wide biking events are sponsored by Orbea and therefore the company’s products are often to be found as prizes in high profile races. Many of Orbea’s current designs are made using the most modern carbon fibre frames. And the company also makes several bikes with frames made entirely of aluminium, which are incredibly lightweight and popular.
Thanks to sponsorship of high profile biking events and shows providing plenty of publicity, the company’s future appears secure. It supports and sponsors many of Spain’s biggest mountain biking events, which include many treks which are open to large numbers of members of the public. The fact that their bikes are now supplied all over the world serves to demonstrate their quality.
