Mountain Biking for Kids
Mountain biking is a great way to be active and to have fun doing it. The parent who bikes should consider introducing to their children to it as early as is possible. Our children grow fast, and it is best to acquaint them to new things and good habits as early as possible.
However, mounting biking is not simply for the experienced. It is also a fantastic choice for the parent who has never biked. Mountain biking is only as complex and challenging as one decides it to be. In its most basic form, it is a brilliant way to spend time as a family while being healthy and riding casually.
There is a downside. Mountain bikes, even the economy variants, are relatively expensive. A well-maintained mountain bike can last an adult a lifetime. Children, on the other hand, grow, and it is vital that you find a girls or boys mountain bike of the appropriate size. Therefore, the parent will likely have to replace the bike several or more times throughout the child’s adolescence.
Another issue with dedicated mountain bikes is that they are not suited for on-road use, and children will generally want a bike to ride around town. For this reason, parents should consider starting with a combination bike. These hybrids usually look like mountain bikes but have relaxed suspensions and less-pronounced tire tread. This type of bike is diverse, and it may be the best choice for the family more interested in spending time together than mountain biking.
Parents should also consider purchasing used bikes. This will help offset the cost of replacing the back each time the child has a growth spurt. Buying used might also make it a viable option to buy the child both a dedicated mountain bike and one for on-road use. Many areas have bike shops with a section for used bikes. Parents should check there first and then use the newspaper or Internet.
The parent that learns alongside the child will generally find the process to be a smooth one, and they might be surprised to find their child pushing them toward greater challenges. The real difficulty lies with the parent who is already an experienced mountain biker. It can be quite difficult to gauge how quickly to introduce the child to the standard routine.
Remember to start slow, especially if the child is new to intense activity. Introduce physical conditioning, but make sure it is fun, and keep it varied. In addition, the parent should not assume a seamless transition simply because the child is quite experienced a riding a BMX bike. The ride position and the feedback from the back are quite different, and they will certainly take some time to become accustomed to for the child.
It is also important to watch out for overconfidence, especially on serious mountain bike trails. The stunts that a child can perform on the street with his or her friends do not necessarily translate to the field. Most importantly, make sure it stays enjoyable at all times, and alter the routine as needed to do so.
