Scottsdale’s hiking trails offer stunning views of the Sonoran desert, and various types of wildlife. Scottsdale provides major trails as well as minor trails. Scottsdale city ordinances prohibit the use of motorized vehicles on its trails. However, horses and mountain bikes are welcome, which allows for a great opprotunity to get close to nature.
One of the most popular hiking destinations in Scottsdale is McDowell Sonoran Preserve. McDowell Sonoran Preserve spans over 20,000 acres of Sonoran wilderness. The scenic trail is rated as easy, and can be accomplished in 2 hours. The length of this rail is roughly 4 miles, however, the Sonoran Preserve offers over 50 miles of all-purpose trails. This leisurely trail winds through a sandy wash and onto a ridge. Once on the ridge, hikers are rewarded with a marvelous view of the McDowell Mountains and expansive desert.
McDowell Mountain North Trail affords an easy hike for roughly 3 total miles. North trail winds through the Sonoran Desert. This part of the desert is truly untouched in that hikers will take notice of older saguaro cacti, ancient palo verde trees, and natural brush. This trail should be hiked in daylight since various mammals are often sighted including javelinas, coyotes, and antelope.
Pinnacle Peak provides hikers with a moderate hike that rises up a 3,000 foot peak. The trail spans over 3 miles, and can be completed in less than 2 hours. Once reaching the summit, hikers will indulge in exquisite views of the Phoenix valley as well as the magnificent Sonoran Desert.
The various minor trails in Scottsdale offer hikers an opportunity to enjoy the wonderful desert landscape in a comfortable, family-friendly setting. Most minor trails wind in and out of public parks. One example is the McCormick Railroad Park. Visitors can enjoy a railroad ride throughout the park as well as a carousel for kids. Onsite is the Xeriscape Arboretum that contains over 100 types of plants from various regions. Visitors can hike through the Xeriscape Arboretum and beyond to explore the surroundings. The Florence Nelson Desert Park spans over 9 acres of desert life. Hikers enjoy the desert botanical nature trail that winds through the park.
