Pitlochry is a picturesque charming town located on the Perthshire Highlands in the heart of Scotland. Lying on the River Tummel, this Victorian settlement with a population of 2500 boasts beautiful scenery and has been a popular holiday resort for many years. Tourism to the area boomed following Queen Victoria’s visit in 1842 and the subsequent construction of the railway station in 1863. The Pitlochry Dam and Fish Ladder is one of the town’s best loved attractions. The dam spans the River Tummel, and was built across a salmon run. The dam is accompanied by a fish ladder, to enable salmon to swim upstream, bypassing the dam into the man-made Loch Faskally. If you are the type to sit back and enjoy a bout of fishing, some of Scotland’s finest salmon and trout fishing is available on the River Tay and River Tummel around Pitlochry.
Pitlochry boasts the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, with a seating capacity of over 500. The theatre is world famous and is often referred to as ‘The Theatre in the Hills’ and runs six plays a week throughout the main tourist season (May to October) and other entertainment throughout the year. There are ample festivals celebrated – the New Year’s Day Street Party, Pitlochry Highland Games, Autumn Festival and Winter Words Festival to name a few. The Enchanted Forest, a renowned sound and light show attracts 20,000 visitors every October. There are a large variety of pubs and restaurants which also offer live entertainment.
