Truckee, California Weather

Truckee, California is located at an elevation of 5,800 feet in Northeastern California.  It is located thirty miles west of Reno Nevada and one hundred miles west of Sacramento, California.  With its Sierra Nevada location, this city of 15,000 residents has a four-season climate very different than Reno and Sacramento.   Reno, with its lower elevation and dry, desert-like terrain, is typically about ten degrees warmer than Truckee.  While Sacramento, with its lowland Mediterranean climate is much warmer and drier than Truckee, typically about fifteen degrees warmer. 

In the winter, Truckee is one of the snowiest cities in the United States.  It receives an average of nearly two hundred inches of snowfall per year.  Winter storms arriving from the Pacific collect in the Sierras dumping plentiful snowfall.  Daytime highs in Truckee typically warm up to near 40 degrees with average low temperatures near 15 degrees.  Truckee’s average low temperature is below 32 degrees for seven months out of the year. 

Summers are generally warm in Truckee with high temperatures averaging near 80 degrees.  Boating, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and rafting are all very popular in the summer time in the Truckee area.  Donner Lake, on the west side of Truckee is a particularly popular summer recreation spot.  Nighttime temperatures remain cool in the summer averaging near 40 degrees.  High temperatures occasionally exceed 90 degrees in Truckee. 

In the fall, Truckee has generally cool, crisp days and is a pretty area for fall colors.  Temperature fall from an average high of 75 degrees in September to 40 degrees in December.  October is a good time to get out and explore the Truckee area as it has less crowds and is typically before the heavy snows arrive. 

Truckee receives an average total of thirty-one inches of precipitation per year.  The vast majority falls in the form of snow.  The Truckee area is forested with species of trees that include Ponderosa Pine, Lodgepole Pine, and California Red Fir.
