Riding on the wrong side?

I was out driving* today on a country road and I saw a rider on the left hand side of the road. I came up next to him and told him it was illegal and dangerous to ride on the left. He thought that it would be more safe to ride on the left. He didn’t really care what I had to say. He was obviously new as well, riding in a t-shirt and street shorts on a low end Jamis mountain bike. At least he wore a helmet…

It’s a shame for the rest of us because he gives all the other law abiding cyclists a bad name.

What are your thoughts? Have you ever encountered an inexpeirienced cyclist riding dangerously like this? What do you do, if anything?

* Sometimes, 4 wheels is what I need, oh well.

I commute by bike 4 days a week & see it all. Most cyclists either don’t know the rules (ride the wrong way, on the sidewalk, run lights & stops) or don’t care. The worst are the roadies that weave through traffic, going on and off the sidewalks whenever it’s convenient. I even saw a guy on a scooter doing that once.

The drivers usually are on the cell phone or reading documents or the paper, so they don’t have much of a chance avoiding bad cyclists.

To those who think riding against traffic is smart, I’ll give you a quick physics lesson:

When you walk (@ 2-4mph), you’re pretty much stationary as far as a car is concerned. Walking against or with traffic won’t affect the severity of injuries if you’re hit. But seeing them coming gives you a chance to jump out of the way.

When you ride a bike (@ 15-25mph) your speed is added/subtracted during any impact. If a road has a 45mph speed limit, going with traffic could mean being hit @ 20-30mph while against it would be more like 60-70mph. Which do you think you’d have a better chance of surviving?

Besides, if your relative speed is 25mph a driver has much more time to react & avoid you than if it were 65mph.
