Racing Bike Tyres on a Mountain Bike? Performance Difference?
I have a Boardman Hardtail Pro, Which i’m very happy with as a mountain bike. My performance has improved quite well and when on the road I am averaging 17mph over 15 miles. In terms of riding a mountain bike on the road, is this a good average speed?
I’m now considering buying a road bike but am wondering if it’s worth it? Is it plausable to put racing bike tyres on my mountain bike wheels? Would I see any performace differences?

I put 26×1.5 slicks on a mountain bike and noticed better performance, about 15%. If you do this, be sure to get tires with a max pressure at least 80 psi. I bought one set with a 60 psi max pressure just because they were on sale. I didn’t like the way they rode.
Your 17 mph average on a mountain bike, probably with knobby tires, is darn good. You’re doing well.
How much additional performance will you get from a true road bike vs a mountain bike with slicks? I put thousands of road miles on a mountain bike with slicks. Once I got a true road bike, I never rode that mountain bike on the pavement again. It’s not just the tires and wheels. It’s weight, gearing, rider position, aerodynamics, hand position, energy efficiency, and more. There is no way a mountain bike with slicks can compare to a road bike on the road. The road bike is in its element. On pavement, the mountain bike is a fish out of water.
