Schwinn tourist commuter bike?
I just bought a Schwinn tourist commuter bike at TARGET, I know, not the best place to go bike shopping, but i really liked the bike. It has a lightweight aluminum frame, big 700c thin road tires, and shimano gear shifters. I bought this bike for $250. I compared it to a Trek 7.2 fx and they were very similar, the Trek was $530, too much for me. Anyways is this a decent bike for general commuting, maybe 10 miles daily? Do not lie to me and tell me it will fall apart! I have an older model schwinn mountain bike that has lasted about 5 years bought also at Target and still works perfect!!!
Searching Target, I can find nothing for a Schwinn “Tourist” bike. I’ll assume you mean a Schwinn 700C Trail Way Hybrid Bike also sold through Amazon.com.
The main thing that worries me is “Aero 24-spoke alloy wheels with paired spoke pattern”. Check your bike. If the facts match up – over time – you’re in trouble. #1) That’s not enough spokes to properly handle any load over a period of time. #2) All these discount store bikes come with a freewheel rear hub vs. a cassette. (Stronger set up.) I would advise not to haul anything on this bike but yourself & a water bottle. It simply can’t handle any extra weight.
The Trek you mentioned comes in 5 frame sizes vs. one for the Target bike. The Trek has 32 spokes per wheel and a rear cassette vs. a cheap freewheel. The Trek has 24 speeds vs. yours at 21. Taken care of properly – some discount store bikes can & do last over 5 years. On the other hand, a bike shop quality bike will last a lifetime.
I paid over $300 two years ago for a Raleigh Hybrid. The same bike now (with inflation) is pushing $400. I’ve never regretted spending the extra $$$ over a discount store bike. Sorry.
