Shimano Mountain Bike Spare Parts

Can I use shimano mountain bike shifters with a shimano road cassette and road derailer?

I’m trying to build a cheap road bike with some parts I have spare. I’d like to use STI shifter but i’m a poor student and I just can’t afford them!! So… i was thinking of just using some shimano rapid fire mountain bike shifters (as these are very cheap on ebay) and using either a straight handlebar or inverting some old road ones and cutting them short like i’ve seen some people do.

I’ve got a shimano tiagra rear mech and am planning on getting a Shimano 8 Spd HG50 road Cassette. Will shimano mountain bike shifters work with these? Are the ratios the same with mountain bike shifters and road shifters?

I’ve also got a bontrager triple chain set and a tiagra front mech. I’ve got a feeling rapid fire shifters won’t work at the front so does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thank you to anyone who can help me!

It really depends on the shifters, just on how much the pull the cable when you shift up. Tolerances in cassettes are tiny. We’re talking millimeters as you’re probably aware. It’s too hard to call really. If I was in a similar position to yourself money wise I’d just see if you could buy one from a store, fit it, see if it works, then return it and buy it online.
