Should I get winter tires for my bike?
I have a mountain bike and I use it everyday to go to school which is 5 minutes away, usually the roads have lot’s of snow but sometimes there’s bare road, i’m wondering if i should get studded tires for my bike. Can I use these tires on the road when the little snow? Usually the road is also icy. Should I even get studded tires or would normal mountain bike tires be good enough?
Depends on how much ice there is on the road. Studded tires work very well, but good ones are expensive, heavy, and have a lot more rolling resistance than regular tires. If the ice patches are smallish and widely spaced, it is possible to roll through them, just remember not to try braking, turning, or accelerating abruptly while on a slippery surface. Unless the roads are sheer ice everywhere, a studded tire on the front wheel only will get you safely through most situations. For hints on winter riding, check the icebike.org website.
