Red Bicycle Wine France

Is the “typical” American lifestyle hamstringing health care?
In general…
We eat junk. We don’t exercise. We work long hours and don’t take vacations.
Compare that to the French.
Their food is made fresh and is a pleasure, healthy red wine with every meal.
The French are a far more pedestrian/bicycle society.
The French are only now starting to have to work on Sundays, get over a month of vacation time every year, and have a less than 40 hour work week.
Do you think that beyond the health care accessibility issue, the basic lifestyles of France (and many other European countries and Japan) impact their costs and burdens on health care?
You have a valid point there. It took me 20 years at my last job to get more than 4 weeks vacation each year. Our American culture is one of the most stress-filled culture on the face of the Earth. We worry about everything, even things that aren’t any of our business. Should we make worry such an ingrained habit? I don’t think so. The stereotypical heart-attack victim is, often more than not, depicted as an overweight, sedentary smoker. More often, the real heart attack victim is younger, on the slender side, and either a smoker or a worrier, and has NO HISTORY OF HEART PROBLEMS.
Our national health care debate should soon zero in on all the junk food, sugar, toxins, and tobacco usage. Tobacco is another topic, as American tobacco is filled with more than 200 poisonous chemical additives. So is our food, not just the so-called junk food.
Sorry about that… I just had to add all that in. Unless we trim down, eliminate toxins and sugar from our diets, stop smoking and “chewing”, and walk more, our national health care will end up costing us way more than anyone can guess right now. That alone will start another “hate-war” against the victims of our “American lifestyle” soon.

The Red Wine Diet $13.48 Wine is good for you, and we finally know why. Wine drinkers are less prone to heart disease, diabetes, and dementia than non- wine drinkers. But what exactly is it about wine that keeps us healthy? Which is better for you, a California Cabernet or Syrah from the south of France? How can you choose wines that both suit your tastes and benefit your health? In a landmark study, Roger Corder revealed that compounds called procyanidins are the key components of wine for preventing illness. Now, in The Red Wine Diet, he argues that drinking the right kinds of red wine and eating procyanidin-rich foods such as dark chocolate, apples, and berries can help us live to a ripe old age-while enjoying all the pleasures of life. Corder’s own tests show that, as a result of grape variety, wine-making style, and other factors, some red wines contain much higher levels of procyanidins than others. With a unique personal rating system, he describes the most beneficial wines he’s found to date. And to round out his lifestyle plan, he includes fifty delicious recipes featuring foods that are high in procyanidins. Corder’s prescription is an easy pill to swallow: Drink red wine every day and live a long and healthy life. |

Science, Vine and Wine in Modern France $71.98 This book examines the role of science in the civilization of wine in modern France by examining viticulture, the science of the wine itself, and oenology, the study of winemaking. Together they can boast of at least two major triumphs: the creation of the post-phylloxera vines that repopulated the late-nineteenth-century vineyards devastated by the disease; and the understanding of the complex structure of wine that eventually resulted in the development of the widespread wine models of Bordeaux, Burgundy, and Champagne. For those interested in agriculture, oenologists and historians of France, this is the first analysis of the scientific battle over how to save the French vineyards and the first account of the growth of oenological science in France since Chaptal and Pasteur. |

A Vintner’s Guide to Red Wine $4.48 A book for red wine lovers by a true expert: a woman who not only knows and loves red wine, but lives for it. Sonoma County vintner Joy Sterling brings wine lovers the book they’ve been waiting for: an up-to-the-minute guide to the best red wines to buy and drink in the new millennium. Culled from a career devoted to wine tasting, wine making, and wine writing, A Vintner’s Guide to Red Wine is Sterling’s detailed roadmap to help steer you to the finest — and most affordable — wines drinkable in the year 2000. Becauseit all starts with the grapes themselves, Sterling begins by exploring the pleasures of each varietal from several angles, such as the differences between California Pinot Noir and Burgundy. In her buying section — the heart of the book — she breaks her recommendations into three helpful categories: expensive (over $25); moderate ($12 to $25); and inexpensive (under $12). Focusing on California, but including Oregon and Washington wines, Sterling applies her expertise to the gamut of wine issues. Among these are her favorite vineyards, choice vintages, what to drink now, what foods and wines make the best combinations, and why red wine is considered hip and healthy. Sterling goes a step beyond traditional wine writers, creating a guide as delightful to read as it is informative. A Vintner’s Guide to Red Wine is a celebration of drinking, eating, and living well — and is best enjoyed with a glass in hand. |
