Down by the Los Angeles River $14.98 In the last decade millions of dollars have been spent on restoring and revitalizing the Los Angeles River and its surroundings. Dozens of parks, miles of bike trails, public art installations and hundreds of trees and plants follow the river as it winds 51 miles through more than 100 communities. Until now no guidebook offered information on the resources along the river. Down by the Los Angeles River is the first on-the-ground guide to checking out sites new and old, and getting to know the historic river that runs through greater L.A. The book includes striking original illustrations, drawn by the author in the field, as well as maps. Twenty-seven walks and twelve bike rides along the Los Angeles and its tributaries, each with directions to the starting point and descriptions of natural, historic, and artistic features along the way Published in conjunction with the Friends of the LA River (FoLAR); part of the proceeds from this book will go to FoLAR’s well-publicized and supported efforts to revitalize the L.A. River |

Cycling Los Angeles $13.48 The book provides 71 on-road trip descriptions (totaling 85 rides) in Los Angeles County. Rides vary from those for short-length family trips on separated bike paths, many longer exploratory and workout trips for more experienced riders on various quality bike routes, and a few "gut-buster" tours for the most physically fit and motivated bikers. Over 1100 one-way miles of biking are described: along harbors, beaches, rivers and lakes, in parks, valleys, and canyons. Included are a coastal century (up and back) from the City of Santa Monica to Port Hueneme in Ventura County and a tour of Avalon on Santa Catalina Island. A master map shows ride locations within the county and a master matrix identifies ride location, level of difficulty, route composition (percentage on bike trail, signed bike lanes or open roadway) and a general trip characterization (i.e., trip is scenic; in a natural setting; there are attractions along the way.) Each trip description contains a detailed trip map and elevation-distance profile (if necessary) and scenic or character-interest photographs are scattered throughout the book. The route maps note the location of water, landmarks, campsites, and other points of interest. |

Mike and the Bike $14.48 "This is a boy whose name is Mike. This is Mike?s pride and joy?his bike?" So begins the inspiring tale of a boy, his best friend, and the adventurous relationship that many children begin when they are young and continue the rest their lives! Illustrated in a retro-contemporary style, Mike and The Bike rhymes its way through Mike’s choosing of his favorite toy – his bike (of course!) – and follows him off on adventures around the world and back home, where he goes to bed wearing his helmet, ready for the next day! Mike and The Bike is the first children?s book written by Grammy Award?winning guitarist and songwriter, avid cyclist and riding partner of Lance Armstrong, Michael Ward. Mike and the Bike came into being, appropriately enough, while Michael cycled near his home in Los Angeles. Includes a foreword by 6-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong and a 30-minute CD with music by Michael and his son, Tennessee Ward, plus a special musical narration of Mike and the Bike by the "Voice of Cycling," Phil Liggett. |
