History and Culture Abound in Flagstaff – Hotels Flourish

Few places in Arizona have the history, culture and ambience of Flagstaff, Arizona. With its rich and varied history and idyllic mountain setting, Flag is a popular destination for Arizonans and out-of-starters alike and in summer and winter alike, Flagstaff hotels host scads of tourists.

Flagstaff offers several interesting museums. At the Museum of Northern Arizona, you can learn about archaeology, geology and native peoples. This museum gives you the chance to explore Native American artifacts, natural science specimens and fine art pieces throughout the nine exhibit galleries. The Pioneer Museum, on the other hand, features artifacts and implements from the early part of Flagstaff and northern Arizona history including ranching, logging, and transportation. Visitors can see a barn, cabin, root cellar, fire truck, steam locomotive, and wagon from Flagstaff’s early days.

Historic Downtown Flagstaff is a historic landmark. This pedestrian-friendly collection of independent art galleries, shops, Flagstaff hotels and restaurants also hosts a year-round calendar of exciting events such as the Fourth of July and Holiday Lights parades, Flagstaff Route 66 Days, Flagstaff Farmer’s market and First Friday Art Walk.

Route 66 is another historic piece of Flagstaff. The “super-highway,” as it was thought of in 1926, represented the freedom to travel across the American West. Two entrepreneurs – Cyrus Avery of Tulsa, Oklahoma and John Woodruff of Springfield, Missouri – came up with the idea of linking Chicago to Los Angeles and started promoting the new highway. The federal government eventually agreed to link small town U.S.A. with metropolitan capitals in the summer of 1926 and designated the road as 66. By 1938 the 2,300 mile highway was continuously paved from Chicago to Los Angeles. Visitors often stay in Flagstaff hotels to spend time enjoying this historic landmark.

Flagstaff offers something for everyone. You can hike and bike our numerous trails, explore our museums and art centers, delve into our ancient Native American ruins or check out the stars at the famous Lowell Observatory. Whatever your favorite pastime, Flagstaff has you covered.
